Sveriges Riksbank Prize Winners in Economic Sciences

Introduction

In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank (Central Bank of Sweden), on the occasion of the Bank’s 300th anniversary, established a Prize in Economic Sciences in the Memory of Alferd Nobel, the founder of Nobel Prize. Sveriges Riksbank Prize follows the same principles as for the Nobel Prizes and this prize is based on the donation received by Nobel Foundation from Sveriges Riksbank.

This prize has been awarded 52 times to 86 Laureates between 1969-2020. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is the responsible body for the selection of the Laureates in Economic Sciences. David Card, Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens, 2021

David Edward Card is an Canadian-American labor economist. He is a professor in University of California, Berkeley, USA.

He got Nobel Prize in Economics for his empirical contributions to labor economics.

Joshua Angrist is an Israeli-American economist. He is a Ford Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Guido Imbens is an Dutch-American economist. He is the Applied Econometrics Professor and Professor of Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Joshua and Guido was awarded with Nobel Prize in Economics for their methodological contribution to the analysis of causal relationship.

Paul R. Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson, 2020

Paul R. Milgrom is an American Economist. He is a Professor of Economics in Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Shirley and Leonard Ely Professor of Humanities and Sciences in department of economics.

Robert B. Wilson is also an American Economist. He is the Adams Distinguish Professor of Management, Emeritus at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded for improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction format.

Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, 2019

Abhijit Banerjee is an Indian-born American Economist. He is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Esther Duflo is a French-American Economist. She is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at MIT.

Michael Robert Kremer is an American Development Economics. He is a professor at University of Chicago.

They presented the experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.




William D. Nordhaus and Paul M. Romer, 2018

William Dawbney Nordhaus is an American Economist. He is a Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale University. He was awarded for integrating climate change into long-run macroeconomic analysis.

Paul M. Romer is an American Economist. He is a professor of Economics at the NYU Stern School of Business. He was jointly awarded for integrating technological innovations into long-run macroeconomic analysis.

Richard H. Thaler, 2017

Richard H. Thaler is an American Economist. He is Charles R. Walgreen Distinguish Service Professor of Behavioral Science and Economics at University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

He was awarded for his contributions to behavioral economics. He paid special attention to three psychological factors:

  • The tendency to not behave completely rationally
  • The notions of fairness and reasonableness
  • The lack of self-control

Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmstrom, 2016

Oliver Hart is a British-born American Economist. He is the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University. Bengt Holmstrom is a Finnish Economist working as the Paul A. Samuelson Professor of Economics at MIT.

Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognized for their contribution to contract theory.
